What happened
In A.R.E. v. Greece (no. 15783/21), decided 7 January 2025, the European Court of Human Rights found that Greece violated the Convention, including Articles 3 and 13, after a Turkish asylum seeker who entered Greece on 4 May 2019 was detained by Greek authorities near the Evros river, denied access to an asylum procedure and legal counsel, and forced across the river back to Turkey. The Court described the pushback as part of a 'systematic practice' of pushbacks from the Evros region, citing consistent reports from national and international bodies. According to the Greek Council for Refugees, which supported the applicant, the Court rejected the Greek government's request to refer the case to the Grand Chamber in early July 2025, making the judgment final.
