What happened
On December 31, 2025, Israel's High Court of Justice issued an interim order barring State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman from summoning officials or publishing draft or final findings on seven October 7 issues, including approval of the Nova festival, defense readiness in southern cities, Gaza border defenses, and the conduct of the government, ministers, the IDF and the Shin Bet on the day of the attack. The order followed petitions by the Movement for Quality Government in Israel and the Military Advocate General's Corps' Military Defense unit, who argued the audit could compromise a future state commission of inquiry. Englman maintained his actions were lawful, and the Attorney-General's Office sided with the petitioners. The court gave him until February 1, 2026 to respond. Later reporting indicates the court subsequently allowed the probe to proceed in limited form, and Englman's term was due to end in July 2026.
