What happened
An Israeli military court convicted a reservist who guarded the Sde Teiman detention facility of several incidents of hitting Palestinian detainees from Gaza with his fists and his weapon while they were handcuffed and blindfolded, in the presence of other soldiers, some of whom told him to stop; some acts were recorded on his phone. On February 6, 2025 the court accepted a plea deal and sentenced him to seven months' imprisonment plus a suspended sentence and demotion to private; Common Dreams reports he had already served about 80 days. The IDF said he admitted to having 'severely abused' detainees, and the court noted other masked soldiers took part but were not identified. The Public Committee Against Torture in Israel called the sentence 'woefully inadequate' and not a significant deterrent.
