What happened
On 26 January 2024, ruling on South Africa's application under the Genocide Convention, the International Court of Justice found it had prima facie jurisdiction and indicated six provisional measures against Israel. It ordered Israel to take all measures within its power to prevent killing, serious bodily or mental harm, and the deliberate infliction of conditions of life calculated to bring about the destruction of Palestinians in Gaza as a group; to prevent and punish direct and public incitement to genocide; to take immediate steps to enable humanitarian assistance; and to preserve evidence. Israel was also ordered to submit a report to the Court on all measures taken to comply within one month of the order. The Court did not order a ceasefire and did not rule on the underlying merits of the genocide allegation.
