High Court quashed Trafford's 2025-26 council-tax reduction scheme, finding it discriminatory against a disabled claimant and a carer and unlawfully adopted
Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council's 2025-26 Council Tax Reduction Scheme counted some income twice, once when it reduced a claimant's Universal Credit and again for council-tax purposes, so two claimants who had previously paid nothing received full bills. On 19 September 2025 the High Court (LL & AU v Trafford MBC [2025] EWHC 2380 (Admin)) found the scheme irrational, discriminatory against a disabled claimant under section 15 of the Equality Act 2010 and against a carer under section 19A, adopted in breach of the public sector equality duty, and unlawfully adopted by the executive rather than the full council.
