Armenian authorities opened a criminal case against former President Robert Kocharyan for abuse of power, bribery and money laundering, alleging he built a family fortune while in office.
On August 25, 2026, Armenia's Anti-Corruption Committee detained former President Robert Kocharyan (president April 9, 1998 to April 9, 2008), and the Prosecutor General's Office opened a criminal case against him for abuse of official power, bribery, and large-scale money laundering. The Committee alleges he used his presidential office between 1998 and 2008 to amass a family fortune through bribes and heavily discounted, illegally acquired state property.
