Ankara prosecutors open a probe after the municipality alleges ex-mayor Melih Gökçek moved undeclared funds abroad; its lawyer says no earlier Gökçek-era complaint is known to have reached trial

Ankara Metropolitan Municipality filed a criminal complaint on 7 August 2026 (made public 31 August) against former mayor Melih Gökçek, his family and others, alleging undeclared funds were moved abroad through a Düsseldorf company, HAMAG, following reporting by journalist Murat Ağırel. The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation on 29 August and summoned Gökçek as a suspect for 4 September.
