Three years after Manipur's 2023 violence, trials have begun in 10 of 3,020 police-investigated cases; Supreme Court proposes special courts and presses CBI and SITs to finish probes

At a 24 July 2026 hearing the Supreme Court (CJI Surya Kant) was told that special investigation teams in eight Manipur districts had filed charge sheets in 301 of 3,020 cases, charges were framed in 41 and trials had commenced in only 10, with 2,924 witnesses cited. Of 31 cases transferred to the CBI, 21 charge sheets had been filed, with closure reports in six.
