What happened
A DHS Office of Inspector General unannounced inspection on May 28-29, 2025 found ICE's Krome North Service Processing Center in Miami holding 1,102 detainees against a maximum capacity of 882 -- 25 percent over capacity, with one housing unit 58 percent over its intended population -- leading to detainees held in intake for over 12 hours and the comingling of different risk classifications. The resulting report, published September 11, 2026 (OIG-26-29), found Krome out of compliance with detention standards for custody classification, food service (including improperly thawed raw chicken and frozen food left in direct sunlight), use-of-force (staff used pepper spray and an unauthorized choke hold instead of de-escalation in two reviewed incidents), medical care, and staff-detainee communication. ICE concurred with all nine OIG recommendations.
