What happened
A periodic transaction report (Filing ID 20025719), digitally signed by James and filed with the Clerk of the House on September 2, 2024, lists stock purchases held by the John A. James Children's Trust dated as early as November 10, 2023, with notification dates of August 13, 2024 and later. The STOCK Act requires reporting within 30 days of notification and no later than 45 days after a transaction. The Detroit News reported that 145 trades were disclosed late (as relayed by the Michigan Advance and Bridge Michigan). In a September 2024 letter to the House Clerk, as described by Bridge Michigan, James wrote that his attorneys uncovered stocks purchased in November 2023 by a trust that functions as a blind trust, that he and his wife had no control over it and did not know of or initiate the trades, and that errors in historic reports were entirely due to oversight by the accountants who manage his family's assets. End Citizens United, an advocacy group, filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics in September 2024. No Office of Congressional Ethics or House Ethics Committee finding or penalty was found in the sources reviewed.
