What happened
Christos Triantopoulos, then Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, announced his resignation in February 2025 once Parliament moved to establish a pre-investigative committee (proanakritiki epitropi) examining his potential criminal responsibility connected to the government's handling of, and the preservation of evidence from, the February 2023 Tempe train collision that killed 57 people. Parliament approved the committee's formation by a vote of 277 in favor. In 2026 that committee concluded its work and recommended criminal prosecution of Triantopoulos for breach of duty (paravasi kathikontos); he denies wrongdoing and calls the accusations baseless. The case remains under separate scrutiny by a delegation from the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions, which visited Greece in September 2026 to examine railway safety and the disaster's aftermath, while victims' families have separately taken related complaints to European bodies.
