On 30 September 2026 Hong Kong Police's National Security Department arrested Tang Ho-wing, 37, founder of the online outlet Boom News, under the 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance on suspicion of acting with seditious intention. The arrest followed Boom News coverage of a 31 August gathering marking the anniversary of the 2019 Prince Edward station clash; police said the gathering allegedly spread disinformation intended to incite hatred against the government and police. The Hong Kong Journalists Association said it is the first publicly known arrest of a journalist for sedition under the ordinance, and Tang was released on bail on 2 October. The Committee to Protect Journalists said 'Reporting is not sedition'.
