What happened
The Committee to Protect Journalists reported in February 2026 that 129 journalists and media workers were killed in 2025, the most since it began records in 1992, with 86 killed by Israeli fire, including 47 cases classed as murder. CPJ says there has been no accountability for any targeted killing of a journalist by Israel since 7 October 2023, nor in the preceding 22 years. Israel has said some of those killed had ties to armed groups; CPJ says it has seen no evidence for such claims in cases it reviewed, including that of Al Jazeera's Anas al-Sharif.
