What happened
The STOCK Act requires senators to disclose stock trades by themselves, spouses and dependent children within 45 days. In May 2022 The American Prospect (Sludge) reported that Sen. John Hickenlooper filed a periodic transaction report on May 16, 2022 covering five 2021 transactions, including four sales of Liberty Broadband and Liberty Media stock by his spouse. In June 2022 Business Insider reported its own review found further spouse stock trades disclosed between two and 14 months after the 45-day deadline; he did not respond to its questions. In May 2026 NOTUS reported he disclosed a spouse's Liberty Broadband sale valued at $500,000 to $1 million nearly a year late, on May 5, 2026, and was similarly late disclosing a dependent child's Palantir sale (valued in the filing at $2,000 to $30,000; his office said the actual sale was $3,312). In 2022 his communications director said, "We missed filing these on time by mistake but we've implemented steps to prevent it from happening again." In 2026 his office said the senator does not personally trade stocks, that his investments are held in a blind trust, and that "the appropriate steps were taken with the Senate Ethics Committee" once the transactions were identified. NOTUS noted the trust has not been certified as a qualified blind trust by the committee. His office did not say whether the $200 first-offense late-filing fine was paid, and the Senate Ethics Committee declined to comment; none of the articles reports a committee finding or sanction.
