What happened
A January 2026 report said New Hampshire had agreed to pay $239 million through a settlement fund to victims of alleged abuse at the state-run youth detention facility, formerly the Youth Development Center, with claims totaling more than $1.8 billion still pending. In June 2026 lawmakers agreed to put $20 million toward settlements out of the $55 million requested by the fund's new administrator, retired judge Gerard Boyle. NHPR reports about 1,700 unresolved cases and around 400 victims settled since the fund was established in 2022.
