What happened
Kyleigh Thurman went to Ascension Seton Williamson Hospital in Round Rock, Texas in February 2023 with signs of an ectopic pregnancy. She says she was sent home with a miscarriage pamphlet rather than given the methotrexate her OB-GYN recommended. When she returned days later the pregnancy had ruptured her fallopian tube, which was surgically removed. After a complaint filed with the Center for Reproductive Rights, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (part of HHS) found the hospital violated the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act by failing to provide an appropriate medical screening exam, including an OB-GYN evaluation. Reported in June 2025; Ascension did not answer questions and said it is committed to high-quality care.
