What happened
On 13 November 2024 Italy's Guardia di Finanza searched Rome's Campidoglio as part of a Rome prosecutors' probe into alleged corruption, bid-rigging and procurement fraud in about EUR 100 million of road-resurfacing contracts, some linked to Jubilee funds, won by companies of Frascati entrepreneur Mirko Pellegrini, whose lawyer says these are only accusations. Five city officials and traffic police employees are reported to be under investigation; investigators allege bribes, including jobs for officials' children, were funded by cutting costs on materials such as bitumen, leaving road layers too thin. These are allegations, not findings. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri expressed outrage, pledged cooperation and set up a technical commission to inspect the firms' completed work.
