What happened
In late July 2026, an audio recording attributed to Bolivian National Police Comandante General Mirko Sokol surfaced in which a voice says a group of six to eight officers had gathered roughly $2 million to arrange his exit and secure another officer's promotion to the top command. Vice President Edmand Lara and deputy Rolando Pacheco filed complaints, and the Fiscalia opened investigations, including one for alleged trafico de influencias. Sokol was cited to testify as a sindicado (formal suspect) on August 28, 2026; he did not appear, and his lawyer asked to reschedule. Sokol acknowledged the voice was his but said the remarks were made at an academic event and taken out of context. On August 31, 2026, the Government Ministry announced his resignation while the investigations continued. No charges or findings have been made.
