What happened
On 5 August 2026 UN High Commissioner Volker Türk said at least 56 people had been executed in Iran on national security charges since 19 March 2026, 27 linked to the protests at the start of the year, with over 100 more at risk. He cited confessions allegedly obtained under torture, executions carried out weeks after arrest, and 12 defendants sentenced to death after one three-hour closed hearing. Iranian officials rejected the criticism, calling capital punishment a lawful measure applied under national law and religious law.
