What happened
The Committee to Protect Journalists says in its Israel-Gaza war tracker (updated September 30, 2026) that at least 247 journalists and media workers have been killed since the war began on October 7, 2023, 241 of them by Israel, and that Israel has killed more journalists than any other government since CPJ began collecting data in 1992. In its report on 2025, CPJ documented a record 129 journalist and media worker deaths worldwide, with Israel responsible for about two-thirds, and 47 cases classified as murder, the most in a decade. CPJ counts only deaths it has verified as work-related. Israel disputes characterizations of its conduct toward journalists.
