What happened
After publicly assuring the community it would not cooperate with federal immigration detention requests, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department signed a 287(g) agreement with ICE on May 30, 2025 — one day after the Trump administration labeled Las Vegas a 'sanctuary' jurisdiction — and expanded a policy flagging foreign-born jail bookings. ACLU of Nevada's January and June 2025 public-records requests about the policy and agreement went unfulfilled, prompting a July 2025 lawsuit; a separate ACLU suit challenging the agreement's legality was dismissed on standing grounds in March 2026 and is now on appeal to the Nevada Supreme Court. Sheriff Kevin McMahill has since confirmed on the record that at least 240 of 264 flagged inmates were taken by ICE between mid-December 2025 and March 2026, and that Metro had withdrawn from a similar ICE program in 2019 over constitutionality concerns before re-entering one in 2025.
