What happened
On 17 November 2025 a special court in Dhaka sentenced former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death for crimes against humanity over the 2024 crackdown; former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah al-Mamun received five years after turning state witness. On 15 September 2026 International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced seven Awami League figures to death in absentia. Human Rights Watch raised concern over trials in absentia; Amnesty International, on 10 April 2026 after two former police officers were sentenced to death for the killing of Abu Sayed, said the tribunal has not consistently followed international fair-trial standards. Hasina rejects the charges as politically motivated; Bangladesh's extradition request to India has not been decided.
