Hungary's Prime Minister's Office (Miniszterelnökség), under the government formed after the 2026 election, filed a criminal complaint with the National Investigation Bureau alleging budget fraud, breach of trust, and abuse of office in connection with two 300-million-forint state grants paid to the Artificial Intelligence Research Center (Mesterséges Intelligencia Kutató Központ, MIKK) via the Bethlen Gábor Fund. The complaint followed reporting that MIKK, registered in December 2024, had no operating research institute at its listed address, that promised research outputs were largely inaccessible, and that some submitted 'research' documents appeared AI-generated rather than original work; the second 300-million-forint grant was approved in February 2026 by Gergely Gulyás, then the minister heading the Prime Minister's Office under the previous government. Gulyás has publicly rejected the allegations as untrue, saying the center repaid the current year's funding after the election and defending AI research as a legitimate national priority.
