On Aug. 17, 2026 the House Committee on Ethics said it is reviewing allegations that Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) may have engaged in sexual misconduct in violation of the Code of Official Conduct, including engaging in inappropriate sexual contact with a House staffer. The committee stated that the fact it is investigating and publicly disclosing its review does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, and it has issued no finding. CNN reported in June 2026, citing three unnamed sources, that the panel had opened the inquiry after following up on a New York Post story about a 2023 incident (a Gomez spokesperson told the Post at the time that the account was "not true"). Gomez responded publicly. CNN reported that he acknowledged making "personal mistakes outside my marriage" but said his actions "were consensual in nature and haven't violated the law or House Ethics rules," and that he would cooperate with the committee. On Aug. 19, attorneys for a woman who they said was interviewed by the committee stated that she told the committee Gomez sexually harassed and assaulted her and that his actions toward her were not consensual; CNN said it had not independently corroborated the attorneys' allegations, Gomez did not immediately respond to them, and the committee declined to comment. Gomez is on the Nov. 3, 2026 ballot in California's 34th District.
