What happened
On 2 March 2025 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced that, in light of Hamas's refusal to accept the Witkoff framework for extending talks, 'all entry of goods and supplies into the Gaza Strip will be stopped.' CNN reported that Israel said the halt was meant to pressure Hamas into accepting new terms for extending the ceasefire's first phase; Israel asserted the move was agreed with Washington, which had not commented at the time. Aid groups and the UN criticised the decision, Egypt rejected the 'politicization of humanitarian aid,' and Hamas called it blackmail. Human Rights Watch reported on 5 March that the closure, including fuel, threatened water production and food supplies for community kitchens.
