What happened
The US Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division and Office of the Solicitor said investigators found that The Exclusive Poultry Inc. and related companies established by owner Tony Bran employed children as young as 14 to debone poultry with sharp knives and operate power-driven pallet lifts at two Southern California plants. The department said the companies also underpaid workers and retaliated against employees who spoke up. Exclusive Poultry agreed to pay nearly $3.8 million in back wages, damages and penalties, and will be monitored for three years. Bran has denied retaliating against workers. The companies supplied Ralphs, ALDI, Grocery Outlet and Sysco; ALDI and Grocery Outlet said they had not worked with the supplier.
