What happened
The canopy at Novi Sad's railway station, recently renovated, collapsed on 1 November 2024, killing 16 people. Prosecutors charged 13 people, including former Construction Minister Goran Vesić, with offences against public safety; the High Court in Novi Sad returned the first indictment in April 2025, and in December 2025 it confirmed the indictment against seven people and halted proceedings against six, including Vesić. On 13 July 2026 the Novi Sad Court of Appeals announced it had reversed that halt and upheld the prosecutor's appeal, so the case can proceed under the original indictment against 13 people; no trial date has been confirmed. Separately, former minister Tomislav Momirović was arrested in August 2025 in a financial-crimes probe by the Special Prosecution for Organised Crime. Charges are allegations that no court has decided; protests demanding accountability have continued.
