What happened
Zawia3 reports that the Urban Development Fund, working with Cairo Governorate, evacuated families from the Al-Taibi area of Al-Sayyida Zeinab in Historic Cairo in December 2020 for the 'Al-Rawda 2' project. A resident put the number at about 360 families; the article also cites more than 300. Residents say the Fund described their inhabited properties as 'derelict vacant land' despite utility receipts and occupancy, and that rent payments stopped after about a year when they refused to sign a form waiving their right to return. The Fund did not respond to the outlet's request for comment. Separately, the Fund's chairman, Khaled Seddik, has said that rental compensation was provided to the remaining Al-Taibi residents until the new project is completed. On 25 March 2025 a New Cairo civil court (case 535/2024) appointed an expert to assess the property's status and rental dues; a second case (764/2025) is pending. In mid-April 2026 the General Survey Authority published maps of targeted properties, opening a 15-day window to contest register information.
