What happened
Pakistan's 27th Constitutional Amendment was signed into law by President Asif Ali Zardari on 13 November 2025. It created a Federal Constitutional Court that took over constitutional matters from the Supreme Court, made the army chief Chief of Defence Forces, and, according to JURIST, grants lifetime immunity to the president and to honorary military ranks under Articles 243 and 248. Supreme Court Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Athar Minallah resigned hours later; Justice Shah wrote that the amendment 'subjugates the judiciary to executive control'. The government and parliament that passed it have described it as a restructuring of the courts and armed forces.
