Mongolia's then-prime minister accused parliament speaker Amarbayasgalan of complicity in coal theft; the speaker resigned on October 17, 2025
Subject of this story
What happened
After losing the Mongolian People's Party chairmanship vote to Dashzegviin Amarbayasgalan, Chairman of the State Great Khural, then-Prime Minister Gombojavyn Zandanshatar announced he would replace the justice minister and accused Amarbayasgalan of complicity in grand corruption involving coal theft (The Diplomat). Zandanshatar's opponents accused him of launching selective anti-corruption probes against the speaker (Mongolia Weekly). On October 17, 2025 Amarbayasgalan resigned as speaker and parliament voted to oust Zandanshatar, a vote the president then vetoed. The accusation is a political claim made amid a party power struggle; the sources do not report any charge against Amarbayasgalan.
