What happened
A June 2026 performance audit by Utah's Office of the Legislative Auditor General reported that institutions in the Utah System of Higher Education disbursed $834,000 to suspected fraudulent applicants and spent over 15,000 hours working to mitigate enrollment fraud. The Salt Lake Tribune reported the audit found Salt Lake Community College received about 2,000 fraudulent applications in the last five years. The audit attributes weak detection to limited information sharing and the absence of a formal system-level response, and recommends system collaboration and clearer accountability.
