What happened
Human Rights Watch reports that Mountaga Tall, a 60-year-old Malian lawyer, former minister (2014-2017) and critic of the military-led government who served as legal counsel to former Prime Minister Moussa Mara, was taken from his Bamako home on 2 May 2026 by unidentified gunmen, according to his family. His wife was assaulted and her phone confiscated when she tried to film. As of HRW's 1 June report, the authorities had not confirmed his custody, location, legal status or health, and HRW said he may be a victim of enforced disappearance. On 26 May the International Conference of Bars, which represents bar associations from 42 countries, called on Mali's authorities to shed light on his disappearance.
