What happened
On 1 August 2024 the IPC Famine Review Committee confirmed famine conditions in Zamzam displacement camp near El Fasher, North Darfur, the first such determination in more than seven years. The WFP release said severely restricted humanitarian access was one of the main drivers; UNICEF's Catherine Russell called the famine 'fully man-made'. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported that most supply roads into the camp, estimated to hold 300,000 to 500,000 people, are controlled by the Rapid Support Forces, which it said has made it nearly impossible to bring therapeutic food, medicine and essential supplies into the camp since fighting intensified around El Fasher. FEWS NET noted an RSF-led siege of El Fasher since April 2024. The RSF has not responded.
