What happened
On 28-29 August 2026 a National Court of Justice panel convicted former president Lenin Moreno of bribery (cohecho) as a direct perpetrator in the Sinohydro case and sentenced him to five years in prison, with 19 others also convicted. The prosecution alleges roughly $76.1 million in improper payments, about 4% of the Coca Codo Sinclair contract, moved from Sinohydro through companies, intermediaries and consulting arrangements. On 22 September 2026 the court denied conditional suspension of the sentence for Moreno and 11 other convicts, reasoning that the ban on suspension for bribery applied because the proceedings began in March 2023. The first-instance ruling can still be appealed.
