What happened
As part of Iraq's 'Operation Dawn' campaign to trace misappropriated state funds, former Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs Adnan al-Jumaili was detained in May 2026 on suspicion of corruption and formally dismissed on June 2, 2026. Al Jazeera reported authorities say he exploited state contracts for kickbacks. Authorities announced recovery of 375kg of gold (358kg seized in an operation involving Kurdistan regional authorities and 17kg from a separate investigation) and found 14 billion dinars (about $10.6 million) hidden in a rainwater drainage pit. A government spokesman said funds tracked in the case exceed 127 billion dinars ($96 million) plus $24 million, real estate, vehicles and gold jewellery. Al-Jumaili has not been convicted.
