What happened
Kazakhstan's Prosecutor General's Office confirmed in September 2025 that it opened a pre-trial investigation into Kairat Kozhamzharov, who headed the financial police and the anti-corruption agency and served as Prosecutor General (2017-2019), on suspicion of exceeding his official authority and laundering criminal proceeds; combined, the offenses carry up to 11 years. His tenure included the Khorgos smuggling case, in which later verdicts reportedly revealed evidence of torture and coerced confessions. He has not been tried, and several former associates, including Talgat Tatubayev, have since been arrested or named suspects. Kozhamzharov had not responded in the sources.
