What happened
Karakalpak lawyer and blogger Dauletmurat Tazhimuratov was sentenced in January 2023 to 16 years over the July 2022 Karakalpakstan protests; in November 2024 the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found his detention arbitrary and called for his release. On 1 May 2026 the Navoi City Court convicted him of disrupting the work of a penal institution and added to his sentence (sources differ on the length), in a trial largely held in closed session at the prison. His brother says he was provoked to justify new charges. Human Rights Watch reported on 1 October 2026 that a smuggled letter describes beatings by prison staff on 8 July and 9 September; Uzbek authorities deny violating the law or torturing him.
