What happened
A May 2025 report by the rights group FairSquare, based on medical and government documents for 17 Nepali men who died in Saudi Arabia in 2023 and 2024, found that death certificates issued by the Ministry of Interior often do not reflect the information on hospital death certificates. In one case described in the report, a hospital certificate noted a lung condition and a tuberculosis diagnosis while the ministry certificate stated only 'natural death'. On 29 April 2026 UN experts urged Saudi Arabia to abolish the kafala system, and Human Rights Watch reports that migrant worker deaths are often recorded as natural and not investigated. Human Rights Watch also reports that Saudi authorities have dismissed such reports because victim accounts are anonymized.
