What happened
A DHS Office of Inspector General unannounced inspection (OIG-22-47, June 30, 2022) found violations of ICE detention standards at the GEO Group-run Folkston ICE Processing Center and Annex. ICE's own review of the April 2024 death of detainee Jaspal Singh, 57, found medical care 'deviated beyond safe limits and directly contributed to his death,' according to The Current and GPB. In June 2025 ICE awarded GEO a roughly $47 million contract to consolidate Folkston with the adjacent D. Ray James Correctional Facility into a complex of nearly 3,000 beds that reporting says would be the largest immigrant detention center in the U.S. GEO told reporters it is in strict compliance with ICE detention standards.
