External auditor Grant Thornton issued a disclaimer of opinion on Nottingham City Council's financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2025, saying it had 'no assurance' over the council's opening cash balances and so could not be sure of closing balances, according to West Bridgford Wire. Grant Thornton has audited the council since 2019 and issued a disclaimer for 2019-20 as well. The auditor says historical problems, including the collapse of the council-owned Robin Hood Energy and the unlawful transfer of housing revenue account money to fund day-to-day services, have contributed to many errors in the accounts, and that some queries to the council remain unanswered. The council's deputy leader and finance director dispute the report's weight, saying local audit is in a 'mess' sector-wide and that disclaimed opinions are common given the national audit backlog.
