What happened
A Legislative Audit Division report released in June 2026 found the Montana Lottery overstated and understated its accounts by an aggregate $18.5 million over several years, which Montana Free Press reports does not mean the money is missing. At a June 24 Legislative Audit Committee hearing, a state accountant attributed the problems to the lottery's former financial services director ceasing to do his job before his death in March 2025. The current financial services director said new safeguards were not yet in place and that the lottery is writing policies and hiring a contract compliance monitor. Committee members asked the lottery to report back in coming months.
