What happened
AZPM reports that in 2024 the Arizona Attorney General's office found Pima County Sheriff's Department leadership may have violated four of its own policies the night a deputy was assaulted in 2022 by then-Sergeant Ricardo Garcia, who was later convicted and sentenced to a year in jail. Sheriff Chris Nanos delayed the internal-affairs investigation until after the criminal case. A retired deputy told the Board of Supervisors that two bureau chiefs investigated two other bureau chiefs. On 3 June 2025 the Board, through County Administrator Jan Lesher, sent a letter asking the Attorney General to review the department's handling once the internal investigation concluded; the Board had received over 100 pages of records, which must be processed and redacted before public release.
