Malta charges ex-PM Muscat and ex-ministers, including Deputy PM Chris Fearne, over a hospitals deal a court annulled as fraudulent
Subject of this story
What happened
In May 2024 Maltese prosecutors charged former prime minister Joseph Muscat with money laundering, fraud, bribery and corruption in public office over the privatisation of three state hospitals to Vitals Global Healthcare, along with former chief of staff Keith Schembri, former minister Konrad Mizzi and others; all pleaded not guilty. Deputy Prime Minister and former Health Minister Chris Fearne was charged with suspected misappropriation and fraud over the same deal, and resigned as deputy prime minister and withdrew his EU Commissioner nomination, saying he expects the court to confirm his innocence. A civil court had earlier annulled the hospitals contract, citing fraud and collusion between the concessionaires and senior officials in the Muscat administration. The criminal case is ongoing and the defendants are presumed innocent.
