What happened
On May 29, 2025, Slovakia's Specialised Criminal Court convicted Peter Kažimír, governor of the National Bank of Slovakia and an ECB Governing Council member, of bribery, fining him €200,000 (a one-year prison term if unpaid) and ordering him to forfeit assets. The court found that while he was finance minister he bribed the then head of the tax administration, František Imrecze, to speed up VAT refunds for several companies. A 2023 criminal-warrant conviction (a €100,000 fine) had earlier been sent to full trial after prosecutors appealed. Kažimír denies the charge, argued it was time-barred, and appealed to the Supreme Court in August 2025; the verdict is not final, and he stayed in office. Check for any later appeal ruling before relying on his current status.
