What happened
Akshay Shinde, accused of sexually assaulting two schoolgirls, died on September 23, 2024 in a police vehicle; police said he snatched a pistol and fired. A magisterial inquiry (reported January 2025) found the claim of doubtful veracity, noting no fingerprints on the weapon and no recovered casings, and recommended FIRs against five Thane police personnel. On April 7, 2025 a Bombay High Court division bench criticised the state's reluctance and ordered an FIR and a Special Investigation Team. The state had argued a CID inquiry was sufficient.
