What happened
Stanley Ugagbe of Secret Reporters was apprehended on 1 July 2026 and held at the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, released on bail on 6 July, then re-arrested on 13 July when invited to collect seized equipment. On 14 July the Federal High Court in Abuja remanded him at Kuje for two months on a six-count charge, including cyberstalking and criminal defamation, filed with his publisher over reporting on Central Bank of Nigeria deputy governor Emem Usoro. The prosecution alleges the reports contained false information meant to harass her; the journalists deny the allegations. The Inspector-General of Police did not respond to CPJ's request for comment; a bail hearing was set for 21 September.
