What happened
Virginia's Office of the State Inspector General released a performance audit of the Department of Juvenile Justice's Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center in December 2025 (Report 2026-AUD-007), ordered by the Governor's office. Reviewing records from July 2024 to August 2025, it found no evidence that wellness checks on confined residents were performed in 27 of 37 required forms, and that many residents did not receive required substance abuse, aggression management or individual therapy. The department said staff conducted the checks but did not document them, and attributed other findings to outdated systems, aging infrastructure and staffing shortfalls; it agreed to corrective actions due in 2026.
