Customs official tasked with fighting fuel smuggling dismissed after disclosure showed luxury watch collection far outstripping his declared income

What happened
Investigative outlet Mexicanos Contra la Corrupcion y la Impunidad (MCCI) reported that Alex Tonatiuh Marquez Hernandez, then director general of customs investigation (charged with pursuing 'huachicol fiscal' fuel-tax fraud) at Mexico's National Customs Agency (ANAM), disclosed in his own 2025 mandatory asset declaration a luxury watch collection worth more than 7.7 million pesos, including one watch valued at 3.78 million pesos, bought in cash -- far exceeding what his prior public salaries could explain. He was also separately accused of undervaluing an imported vehicle to pay minimal duty. President Sheinbaum confirmed his dismissal from ANAM in December 2025, around the same time the United States revoked his visa.
