What happened
Footage from Valjevo, Serbia, on the night of August 14-15, 2025, during anti-government protests, showed about a dozen uniformed officers striking several young men with batons more than 100 times as they lay defenceless on the ground, according to Balkan Insight. Serbia's Ombudsman announced an investigation. On August 17, 2025 the government said responsibility for the incident should be established while also condemning violence against police. In October 2025, 27 people filed a criminal complaint naming 28 officers and unidentified others; in May 2026 the Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office took over the case. According to N1, as of the August 2026 anniversary no one had been held accountable. Rights groups say concealed police identities fuel impunity.
