What happened
Malawi's National Audit Office report on the accounts of government for the year ended 31 March 2024, as reported by Nyasa Times on 16 June 2026, found more than MK158 billion in financial irregularities across ministries, departments and agencies, including MK28.7 billion in education infrastructure projects left unfinished by the Education Infrastructure Management Unit, MK6.4 billion allocated to the National Registration Bureau for equipment that went unused, and MK5.3 billion in overstated revenue at the Ministry of Agriculture. Auditor General Thomas Makiwa's report says the failure to produce supporting documentation was 'sufficiently widespread to raise suspicions that records could be intentionally withheld' and that the matter will be referred to the relevant authorities. The audit does not itself establish theft or criminal offences.
